About

Who made this course, and why it is free.

Scribe Book School is made by Scribe Media, a book writing and publishing company in Austin, Texas that has published more than 3,000 books, including 23 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestsellers.

What this site is

A free, text-based course for people with expertise who want to write and publish a nonfiction book. It has six modules in order, each a long lesson with examples, worksheets and common mistakes, and each ending with a checklist. The full checklist puts every item in one place and saves your progress in your browser. There is no signup, no email gate and nothing to buy.

It is deliberately narrow. It does not try to convince you to write a book, and it is not about fiction. It covers the steps from "I have decided to write this book" to "the book is published and working for me."

Where the advice comes from

The method follows The Scribe Method by Scribe's co-founders Tucker Max and Zach Obront, which Scribe publishes free online. Each module links to the specific chapters behind it, so you can read the original reasoning. The lessons themselves, the examples, the worksheets and the checklists were written for this site.

Where a lesson uses a number, such as a pricing range or a typical chapter count, it says where the number comes from and links to the source. General facts about ISBNs and subject categories link to the organizations that maintain them: the International ISBN Agency and the Book Industry Study Group. Publishing platforms change their terms from time to time, so check current rules on the platform before you rely on a specific figure.

How Scribe makes money

Scribe sells book services: ghostwriting, coaching for authors who write their own books, editing, design, publishing and marketing. That is the business. This course is free because the most honest way to show what we know is to give it away, and because some readers decide partway through that they would rather have help.

We have tried to be fair about the alternatives throughout. You can write the book yourself, hire freelancers for editing and design, self-publish on your own accounts, pursue a traditional publisher, or work with a company like Scribe. Each has real strengths, and the lessons say so.

Talking to Scribe

If you want to talk through your plan, there is an optional form on the home page and in Modules 4 and 5, or you can book a free consult directly on scribemedia.com. You never need to talk to anyone to use this course.
